In May 2024, the Biobío Region of Chile experienced a significant decrease in fish landings by 18.3%, totaling 151,238 tons. The region, which contributes 43.5% to the country's total landings, saw a decline in both artisanal and industrial subsectors. The artisanal subsector experienced a sharp decrease of 39.4%, primarily due to a lower landing of Common Sardine, while the industrial subsector saw a slight increase of 2.3%, driven by a higher landing of Mackerel. From January to May 2024, the region experienced an overall contraction of 18.2% in landings, with the artisanal subsector seeing a significant drop of 52.6%.
