The United States consumes 1.2 billion pounds of mangoes per year, spending around $800 million, with 99% being imported from 21 countries, led by Mexico, Peru, Brazil, Ecuador, and Guatemala. The National Mango Board is working to increase consumption and position mango as a staple fruit in the US. Peruvian mangoes, particularly the Kent variety, are highly regarded for their quality. However, Peruvian production and exports have been significantly reduced by El Niño, with the potential for climate change adaptation through the development of new mango varieties.
