The National Association of Vegetable Canned Food Industries (Anicav) in Italy has reported a 10% decrease in the processing of tomatoes this year, with a total of 5.5 million tons processed, due to a reduction in both the number of hectares planted and the yield per hectare. Despite challenges such as drought and high temperatures, agricultural yields were good. However, industrial yields were lower, requiring more raw material to maintain quality standards. This decline is part of a larger trend in Europe and globally. China was the only major producer to increase production by 29.2%. Italy, the world's third-largest tomato processor, accounts for 14.8% of global production and 56.5% of European production, with a total turnover of 4 billion euros. Anicav's general manager highlighted the significant increase in production costs, particularly energy costs, as a major challenge for the industry.
