Argentina is embarking on a significant initiative to produce high-quality coffee in Tucumán, aiming to supply 30% of the domestic market. Despite historical challenges due to climate and competition from other crops, 20 producers are experimenting with various coffee varieties, including Geisha, to identify those best suited for the region. The first major harvest is anticipated in two years. The project is driven by rising demand and the potential for a niche market, with certain areas in Tucumán offering optimal conditions for coffee cultivation. The region's extreme temperatures necessitate growing coffee under native forest cover for protection, and IDEP is working with 22 producers to explore the estimated 8,000 hectares suitable for cultivation.
