Italian parliamentarians are seeking to reduce the VAT on oysters from 22% to 10%, in an effort to make the dish more affordable. The proposal, which has support from various political parties, including the Democratic Party which previously proposed a similar measure, aims to make oysters as taxed as eggs, yogurt, or powdered milk for children. The cost to the state is estimated at 200,000 euros per year. However, it is not clear what Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni thinks about the proposal, especially given her recent criticism of caviar.
