Brazil has temporarily halted beef exports to four countries, including China, Thailand, Iran, and Jordan, following the confirmation of a single case of 'mad cow' disease in Pará. This suspension affects significant trade volumes, with last year's exports to Jordan reaching 11,500 tons, worth US$ 55.3 million, and Thailand importing 6,100 tons, generating US$ 17.1 million. Iran's imports from Brazil were 1,300 tons, totaling US$ 5.4 million. Recently, Russia has imposed restrictions on beef imports from Pará, affecting a single meatpacking plant, with provisions for continued imports of boneless meat under specific conditions. The suspension is prompted by a suspected atypical case of the disease, though the exact type is yet to be confirmed. The Ministry of Agriculture insists that the suspension does not indicate a risk to the herd or consumers and is reviewing the situation in anticipation of potential further measures.
