China has approved the import of fresh durians from Vietnam, making it the second country after Thailand to have market access for the fruit. After two years of negotiations, China and Vietnam signed bilateral phytosanitary protocols. Vietnamese durians will now be able to be imported through all border gates where the GACC allows fruit import. However, growers, packers, and exporters in Vietnam must follow specific requirements, including pest control and testing of 2% of durians in each shipment. In 2021, Vietnam's durian production increased by 15% to 642,600 metric tons. China imported 822,000 metric tons of fresh durians in 2021, valued at $4.21 billion.
