Brazil: Fruits arouse interest in food irradiation market

Companies that work with equipment for food irradiation point out that fruits and meat products are the agro items that, in principle, most interest investors. The discussion arose this Wednesday afternoon (15/09), during the last day of the Seminar on Food Irradiation, promoted by the Brazilian Society for Radiological Protection (SBPR), with support from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Map) . All over the world, fruits have been safely irradiated on a large scale. On average, they last three times longer after exposure to this form of energy. Proteins were included in the interest list due to lower seasonality and the good acceptance of the irradiated product in other countries. According to the debaters, 186 irradiation centers are located in 47 countries and the consumption of irradiated food is allowed in 60 countries.
