Georgia's cattle industry is a significant part of the state's economy, with over 1.3 million head of cattle valued at over $676 million. The industry generates more than $262 million in annual cash receipts and has a projected economic impact of over $2 billion, as it exists in all 159 counties. The industry is dominated by commercial cow-calf producers, with a notable portion being purebred cow-calf producers and stockers. Despite the majority of producers owning fewer than 100 head of cattle, the top 13% own the majority of the cattle. Cattle are primarily sold through livestock markets and most yearlings are shipped to the Midwest for fattening. The Georgia Cattlemen's Association is the largest single-commodity producer group in Georgia, with over 6,000 members. Consumers in the United States spend more than half of their meat budgets on beef, which is the most popular consumer meat.
