In the 2019/20 marketing year, Germany's Federal Association of Cattle and Pigs (BRS) reported that 192.2 million tonnes of feed were provided to livestock, with 95.4 percent sourced domestically and the remainder imported. The imported feed included vegetable oils and fats, oil cake and oil meal, rapeseed, and soya, with a significant portion from deforestation-free areas. Animal husbandry uses approximately 60 percent of Germany's agricultural area, particularly for fodder cultivation, which is not suitable for crop production. Roughage makes up 79 percent of animal feed, with by-products from food processing and crop rotation also contributing. The BRS stresses the importance of these nutrient cycles for sustainable food production.
