The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Foreign Agricultural Service predicts that Algeria will maintain its wheat and barley sowing areas at 2 million and 1 million hectares respectively for the 2025/2026 season. However, rainfall amounts have been insufficient, leading to below-average vegetation indices in most regions. Despite the government's efforts to reduce bread consumption, wheat consumption is expected to remain stable, accounting for 60% of the food ration. Barley consumption could increase due to poor pasture conditions. As a result, Algeria's grain imports, mainly from Russia and the EU, are expected to remain high.
