Mexico remains the world's second-largest green chili producer, with a 2.7% increase in 2020 to 3,324,260 tons, generating 34,120 million pesos in value, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. The country grows over 100 varieties, with the jalapeño, poblano, and serrano being the most popular. Chili production contributes significantly to the agricultural economy and provides competitive income for producers. The main producing states are Chihuahua, Sinaloa, Zacatecas, San Luis Potosí, Sonora, and Jalisco. Green chili is also used for its medicinal properties and plays a major role in Mexico's daily consumption, accounting for 20.6% of the national vegetable production and per capita consumption at 17.2 kilograms.
