High oleic soybeans, marketed as Plenish, are becoming a popular alternative feed ingredient on dairy farms due to their potential to increase milk fat and reduce ration costs. Their high oleic and low linoleic content allows for higher dietary inclusion levels than commodity soybeans, resembling palm oils and other feedstuffs. Despite corn silage being the primary forage choice for its high tonnage, nutritional qualities, and cost-effectiveness, its high linoleic acid content can increase the ruminal polyunsaturated fatty acid load, leading to decreased milk fat percentage. University studies have shown that Plenish can replace some of the high oleic feed sources, such as palm oil, and reduce the overall ration cost. It is recommended that farmers consult with their nutritionist to determine if Plenish is suitable for their farm.
