The Bangladesh government has successfully exported 1,352 tonnes of hilsa fish to India, generating revenue of 1.36 crore US dollars so far this year. Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim announced this at a press briefing, highlighting a significant achievement in marine life conservation and international trade. To further support hilsa fish population, the government is implementing a 22-day fishing ban, starting from October 7, across 7,000 square km to ensure safe spawning. This initiative, enforced in 20 districts, is supported by collaborations with various agencies and a suspension of ice factory operations. This conservation effort, part of the Mother hilsa conservation drive 2022, is aimed at boosting the already increased hilsa production, which has doubled from 2.98 lakh metric tonnes in 2008-09 to 5.65 lakh metric tonnes in 2020-21, benefiting numerous employees in the sector and enhancing Bangladesh's reputation as a leading hilsa exporter.
