Severe flooding in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in late April and early May 2024, caused significant damage to rural and urban areas, affecting over 19,000 rural families and more than 48,000 producers. The floods led to the destruction of infrastructure, loss of housing and production facilities, and substantial losses in grain and dairy production. Soil erosion and pasture damage were also extensive, with over 2.7 million hectares affected. The floods have also made grazing difficult and increased the consumption of silage. The floods have also challenged the health management of dairy herds and led to the redesign of cities and production sites. Some producers have been relocated or have changed their agricultural activities due to the damage.
