A European-funded research project, Soil O-Live, has been launched to investigate the health of soil in Mediterranean olive groves, focusing on the effects of agricultural management. The project, which has received 7 million euros from the European Union, aims to develop a model of agricultural management that minimizes negative impacts and enhances biodiversity. The project will also look into the presence of microplastics in the soil, carbon capture potential, and the effect of pesticides and herbicides on plant genetics. The research will be conducted by a consortium of academic institutions and companies from across Europe, with a particular focus on identifying practices for soil restoration and improving microbial activity.
