Indonesia is facing a foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreak among cows, with over half a million livestock affected across 26 provinces, leading to concerns about beef prices. Despite the national average price for beef falling, prices in Jakarta have risen due to the disease. Farmers may release sick cows to the market at low prices to prevent further losses, resulting in an oversupply of cheap beef. The outbreak, affecting 548,955 cows, was recorded in 309 districts and cities as of November 28, 2022.
