Hungary's agricultural sector, famous for its wine, paprika, and cattle, also boasts a significant horticulture industry. The sector occupies a small portion of the country's total agricultural area but contributes greatly to its agro value output. The sector's focus is on high-value crops like sweet peppers, tomatoes, and apples. Despite the low area dedicated to covered production, it plays a crucial role in quarter of the vegetable production. However, the sector faces structural challenges such as low vertical integration, inadequate post-harvest processing infrastructure, and a skills shortage. The COVID-19 pandemic briefly affected the sector but didn't significantly change the trend. A series of policy measures and subsidies, including for renewable energy and climate change adaptation, aim to support and develop the sector. Geothermal energy, a potential sustainable energy source for horticulture, is also being explored.
