International seed companies have opened their experimental stations in Murcia, Spain, to present new melon and watermelon varieties to European producers and buyers. The goal is to create varieties that meet consumer preferences, distribution and processing industry demands, and farmers' needs. Factors such as pest and disease resistance, sustainability, adaptation to production areas, and productivity are considered. The flavor is the key factor in the success of a variety. In the last decade, seedless watermelon varieties have increased consumption. Murcia leads in national melon production and is second in watermelon production. In 2021, the region exported 208,680 tons of melon and 240,530 tons of watermelon.
