Italy has seen an 85% surge in durum wheat imports in the first ten months of 2023, potentially pushing the foreign deficit over 50% for the first time. This is due to challenges in the agricultural sector, including a 35% price drop since July, a 10% decrease in sowings, and climate crisis-induced delays. Poor weather conditions have also impacted national production, affecting the quality and yield of the wheat. Additionally, the complexity of new European legislation has led to over 50,000 companies renouncing payments due to bureaucratic and technical difficulties.
