The European Union (EU) is the primary trading partner of Russia, accounting for 38.5% of Russian trade in 2020, with Russia being the largest supplier of natural gas, oil, and petroleum products to the EU. The trade between Russia and the EU saw a decrease of about 20% in 2020 due to the pandemic, but there was an increase in foreign trade in food products. Russia exported agricultural products to the EU for $ 2.4 billion in the first eight months of 2021, a 32% increase from the same period last year. The Netherlands and Latvia are the leading buyers of Russian agricultural products among EU countries. The supply of Russian agricultural products to the EU, excluding the UK, increased by 75% from 2016 to 2020. The top five goods exported by EU countries to Russia include cheeses and cottage cheese, wine, pork, bakery and flour confectionery, and animal feed.
