In Germany, the area under vegetables is decreasing but their productivity is increasing

In 2023, around 5,970 agricultural enterprises in Germany harvested a total of 3.9 million tonnes of vegetables – 4% more than in 2022 and 2% more than the average for 2017-2022. At the same time, the area of vegetable crops decreased by 3% to 122.8 thousand hectares compared to 2022 and by 4% less than the average figure for 2017-2022. This is reported by FruchtPortal with reference to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). Organic farms produced 480,000 tons of vegetables on 18,400 hectares - 15% of the total area sown with vegetables and 12% of the total harvest. Compared to 2022, the area of organic vegetables has increased by 3%, and the volume of the harvest has increased by 11%. Compared to the average for 2017-2022, the area of organically grown vegetables increased by 15%, and the volume of the harvest - by 25%.
