In the first eight months of 2021, Kazakhstan has seen a significant decrease in meat consumption across most categories, with a 10.6% drop. This period also marked a 7.4% increase in meat and poultry prices, with lamb experiencing the most notable price hike at 14.9%. Despite the higher prices, poultry meat saw the smallest increase among the meats. The production of fresh or chilled meat has decreased by 4.6% compared to the same period in 2020, except for poultry meat, which saw a 4.3% increase. However, household consumption of most meats has declined, with the exception of beef, which saw a slight increase of 0.9%. The price increases have led to a situation where 7% of Kazakhstan's population finds it difficult to afford to eat hot dishes with meat or chicken, or equivalent vegetarian food, every two days.
