This year, prices for onions have dropped by half compared to last year. On the markets, quality onions can be bought for 16 UAH/kg depending on the variety, and in supermarkets, they are even cheaper at 6-7 UAH/kg. However, what is good for consumers translates into losses for farmers, noted Wanda Serdiuk, the head of the Department of Development Management of the Agro-Industrial Complex and Land Resources of the Khmelnytskyi Regional State Administration, writes proagro.com.ua. "Some farms that grow vegetables decided not to harvest onions this year at all because the price is below the cost of production. Therefore, some areas are simply plowed up without even harvesting.
