The National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) has reported a decrease in the U.S. cattle inventory, with the 12-month calving cow population dropping by 3% to 38.3 million from the previous year. The number of cattle weighing 500 pounds or more also saw a 4% decrease to 19.9 million, and calves under 500 pounds decreased by 3% to 13.6 million. The number of dairy cows slightly increased to 9.4 million, and the U.S. slaughter cattle and calf population across all feedlots decreased by 4% to 14.2 million. The share of fattened cattle in feedlots with 1,000 or more heads increased by 1% to 82.5% of the total herd.
