India is setting its sights on boosting its seafood exports from the current $8 billion to around $12 billion within the next two years, with a strategic focus on penetrating high-end markets such as the United States and Europe. As the largest supplier of frozen shrimps to the U.S., with exports valued at $2.6 billion in 2022/23, India plans to enhance its export value through added quality and targeting premium markets, while also ensuring adherence to commendable labor and environmental standards among its exporters. Despite concerns over potential global demand fluctuations, the shrimp farming industry continues to be a significant source of employment in Southern India. The government has countered claims of labor exploitation in the sector, attributing such allegations to competitive trade disputes.
