India has extended the duty-free import period for yellow peas until December 2024, as part of efforts to control rising pulse prices. The extension follows a series of previous extensions, and as of 2023-24, pulse imports in India have doubled to USD 3.74 billion. Despite being a significant producer of pulses, India continues to depend heavily on imports to meet its domestic demand, which has increased from 16.3 million tonnes in 2015-16 to 24.5 million tonnes in 2023-24.
