The Indian government has started purchasing wheat from farmers at the minimum support price for the 2025-26 marketing season, procuring over 1 million tonnes in the first few days. This is a significant increase from the previous year, with robust arrivals in states like Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat. The government aims to meet its procurement target of 31 MT by including states like Punjab and Haryana, which are expected to contribute significantly to the procurement. The agriculture ministry projects a record wheat production of 115.3 MT in the 2024-25 crop year. Since the 2021-22 season, the government has seen a steady increase in wheat procurement, having learned from past years when purchase volumes fell due to lower output. Bonus payments have been announced by the state governments of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan to encourage farmers.
