The USDA in New Delhi predicts a slight increase in India's oilseed production for MY 2022/23, reaching approximately 42.1 MMT, which is a 1% increase from the previous year. This optimistic forecast is attributed to expected normal monsoon conditions, ample water levels, and the availability of agricultural fertilizers. Additionally, a global supply shortage and the anticipation of a higher minimum maintenance price (MSP) are expected to impact oilseed plantings.
Indian meal production is also projected to increase by 2% in MY 2022/23, reaching 20.7 million tonnes, driven by a rise in demand for animal feed. Total exports of meal are expected to increase by 13% to 3.7 million metric tons, with traditional South Asian destinations likely to benefit from the world's short supply of meals. However, India's edible oil self-sufficiency claims may be undermined by growing imports needed to meet domestic demand, which are projected to rise by 6% to 14.5 million tons. Despite efforts to ensure domestic supplies and reduce price volatility, India's reliance on imported edible oils is expected to persist.
