Potato growers in India's Punjab state are facing heavy losses due to a significant decrease in the selling price of their produce. The selling price has dropped to Rs 4-4.50 per kg from Rs 17-18 per kg last year. This is due to a bumper crop in other potato-growing states, leading to an oversupply and reduced demand for Punjab’s potatoes. The current rates do not allow farmers to recover their input costs, leading to a loss of about 50%. Farmers are storing their potatoes in cold storage, hoping for prices to increase in the future. They are also calling on the state government to fix a minimum price for their crop to ensure they can recover their input costs.
