In December, India achieved a 3-month low in edible oil imports, reducing them by 25% to 1.19 million tons, largely due to significant price hikes in sunflower and palm oil. Sunflower oil imports saw a 22% decrease to 265 thousand tons, and palm oil imports plummeted by 40% to 503 thousand tons, hitting a 9-month low, as prices surged in November and December. Conversely, soybean oil imports increased by 3% to 420 thousand tons, making it a more economical option for Indian processors. The rise in palm oil prices, which are currently $100 per ton higher than soybean oil, is anticipated to persist, leading to further reductions in imports in January. The Indian Oilseed Producers Association is set to release the December import data by mid-January. India's main suppliers for palm and palm kernel oil are Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand, while soybean and sunflower oil are primarily sourced from Argentina, Brazil, Ukraine, and Russia.
