India is developing genetically modified (GM) seeds for 13 crops, including rice, wheat, and sugar cane, with the potential for the commercial release of GM mustard seeds in the next two years. The country's state Agricultural Research Council and other organizations are also conducting research to develop GM seeds for potatoes, beans, lentils, chickpeas, and bananas. This initiative aims to make agriculture more efficient due to the growing population and limited farmland in the country. Currently, GM cotton is the only crop allowed for cultivation in India.
