India's milk production saw a nearly 4% increase to 239.3 million tonnes in 2023-24, as per government data. This is despite a 16% annual decline in milk output from buffaloes. The milk production growth is attributed to improved productivity, with per capita milk availability increasing to 471 gm per day in 2023-24 from 459 gm per day in 2022-23. Uttar Pradesh was the top milk producing state in 2023-24. The union minister also stressed on the need to bring dairy farmers into the organised sector, vaccinate livestock, and improve livestock breeds to boost milk production and exports.
