The Ñuble Department of Agriculture visited the INIA Quilamapu wheat genetic improvement program to understand the development of new wheat varieties for the south-central region of Chile. The program, which has developed around 40 varieties in 56 years, is focusing on creating new varieties under an agroecological approach, reducing the use of chemical products. The main emphasis is on creating wheat for bread production and candeal wheat for pasta, considering climate change scenarios and the need for sustainable, nutritious food production. The Instituto de Investigaciones Agropecuarias (INIA) is Chile's leading agricultural research, development, and innovation institution, dedicated to enhancing food security through the development of high-quality wheat varieties.
