The UN General Assembly has declared 2023 as the International Year of Millets (IYM), with the Indian government leading the initiative under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Millets, one of the first crops domesticated in India, are grown in 130 countries and are a staple diet for 500 million people in Asia and Africa. The government aims to establish India as a global hub for millets, highlighting their potential to support livelihoods, boost farmer income, and ensure food and nutritional security. The Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare is adopting a multi-stakeholder engagement approach to promote IYM 2023 through various activities and events across the year.
