An international research team has found that mixing sea water with fresh water could be a solution to the urgent issue of water shortage for agricultural crops, as 70% of Earth's fresh water is already in use. The study, published in Agronomy 2021, found that while some crops can grow in sea water concentrations up to 1–30%, tomato productivity significantly declined at higher concentrations. However, eggplant and pepper growth was not significantly affected. The study also found that low concentrations of seawater, 5% and 10%, can improve crop nutrition and organoleptic characteristics.
