The Indian Sugar and Bioenergy Manufacturers Association (ISMA) has called on the Indian government to reconsider allowing the export of surplus sugar, given the projected domestic surplus of up to 3.6 million tons for the season. With initial stock of around 5.6 million tons and projected domestic consumption of 28.5 million tons, the final stock is expected to reach 9.1 million tons by the end of September 2024, leading to additional costs for producers. ISMA argues that allowing exports would improve the financial liquidity of sugar factories and enable timely payments to cane farmers, contributing to the smooth functioning of the sugar industry and strengthening economic stability.
