The 2024 processing tomato harvest in Northern Italy was severely impacted by adverse weather, leading to historically low yields and high production costs. The harvest, lasting 113 days, was disrupted by rain, causing increased industrial costs and underutilized production lines, with only 2.4 million tons processed, well below the five-year average. The OI Pomodoro Nord Italia has sought government aid for affected companies, as persistent rain and phytosanitary issues compounded economic difficulties for farmers. Approximately 850 hectares of tomatoes were left unharvested due to flooding, and the supply chain is seeking institutional support to prepare for the 2025 campaign.
