Italian fruit and vegetable exports have seen a significant recovery in the first half of 2021, with a 13.9% increase in value and a 10% increase in volume compared to the same period in 2020. The value of imports decreased by 9.5% and the quantity by 8.1%. The export of fresh fruit and nuts experienced the highest growth. Apples, kiwis, and pears were the leading products. However, Italy's second place in the national ranking of food exports is under threat, as the gap between Italy and Spain, its main competitor, is increasing. Fruitimprese's President, Marco Salvi, has pointed out high labor costs and the challenge of finding labor as the primary reasons for this loss of competitiveness. Other factors including climatic conditions and pests are also impacting the competitiveness of Italian producers.
