The Japan Spirits and Liquor Association has introduced new regulations for labeling a product as 'Japanese whiskey', effective from April 1, 2024. These regulations require the whiskey to be made with Japanese water and aged in barrels in Japan for at least three years. Although adherence to these rules is voluntary and lacks penalties for non-compliance, the initiative aims to enhance consumer trust in Japanese whiskey brands. This decision was prompted by a significant rise in the global export volume of Japanese whiskey, which increased 14-fold from 2012 to 2022, reaching $370 million, amid concerns over the authenticity of products labeled as Japanese whiskey by foreign manufacturers.
