Poor harvests in Hokkaido, the Russian Far East, and Alaska have led to a surge in the price of salmon roe in Japan, reaching the highest level since the late 1980s. The wholesale price of domestic soy sauce-cured salmon roe has increased by 80% to 90% year-on-year, reaching 11,500 to 13,000 yen per kilogram. The decline in fish size and reduced catches in Hokkaido and Russia have contributed to the supply shortage, which has been worsened by Japan's reliance on imported roe. The price of salmon roe in Russia has also risen sharply, and Alaska's salmon production has seen a significant decrease. As a result, retail prices in Japan are expected to rise further, potentially reaching 1,980 to 2,980 yen per 100 grams in the next few months.
