(Jeju=Yonhap News) Reporter Go Seong-sik = Jeju Province announced on the 30th that it will operate a "Winter Livestock Disaster Response Situation Room" in preparation for the unexpected cold wave and heavy snow this winter.
Jeju Province plans to support livestock farmers by covering the cost of livestock disaster insurance premiums for cattle, pigs, chickens, and beekeeping farms to help with rapid recovery in the event of a disaster.
Accordingly, when a weather alert is issued, it will swiftly disseminate weather conditions and livestock management guidelines, and strengthen on-site response by conducting preemptive inspections of livestock facilities.
Additionally, in collaboration with agricultural cooperatives, livestock cooperatives, and producer groups, it will provide guidance on management practices for each type of livestock, such as insulation, ventilation, water supply, and winter preparation for beekeeping, to help farmers prevent issues on their own.
Jeju Province will also implement support for preventing livestock facility fires, including inspections of outdated electrical installations and installation of sprinklers, to prepare for the risk of winter fires on farms.
In Jeju, damage from cold waves and heavy snow, such as the collapse of livestock facilities and the death of bees, has been continuously occurring. Over the past three years, approximately 1.2 billion won has been invested in winter livestock disaster recovery funds.
According to the Meteorological Administration, this winter's temperatures are expected to be at or slightly above average, but there is a high possibility of a short-term strong cold wave if cold air from the north descends.
