The Australian cattle export industry relies heavily on the Indonesian market, but outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease and lumpy skin disease in 2022 highlighted the need for improved biosecurity in Indonesian feedlots. In response, the Australian Livestock Exports Limited (MLA) initiated the Indonesian Biosecurity Support Program, funded by the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF), to assist Indonesian feedlots in enhancing their biosecurity capabilities. The program, managed by Ausvet, has been successful in providing crucial guidance and resources, leading to the adoption of 75% of the recommendations within six months. It aims to further reduce the incidence of other diseases and achieve accreditation for Indonesian feedlots to improve productivity and competition, showing that practical, cost-effective measures can significantly enhance biosecurity.
