Sugarcane farmers in the Nyando Sugarbelt have requested a two-year delay in the implementation of the Quality-Based Cane Payment System (QBCPS), a new payment method based on sucrose content. This request was made during a recent public participation on the QBCPS Regulations 2023. Despite this request, the farmers express optimism about the new payment method, which they believe will prevent exploitation by millers. The Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) has developed a total of 27 locally bred cane varieties with high sucrose content and is encouraging farmers to plant these. The AFA has also established several Sugar Testing Units (STUs) to implement the sucrose content-based pricing, with plans to roll out the system after the regulations are in place. Farmers have called for more awareness and capacity building on the new payment model and the necessary practices to produce cane with a high sucrose content.
