The Korean Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency (APQA) has announced the approval for the import of fresh grapefruit from Vietnam, making it the third Vietnamese fresh fruit to be allowed into Korea after dragon fruit and mango. This decision is anticipated to provide significant opportunities for the Vietnamese agricultural sector, tapping into Korea's market of 50 million people. Vietnam, which has over 100,000 hectares dedicated to grapefruit cultivation, produces over 900,000 tons of the fruit annually. The process of negotiating this agreement was initiated in 2018 and accelerated following the pandemic, resulting in a technical agreement in April 2024. The Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association has expressed optimism, highlighting that grapefruit is among the fruits with increased export value and anticipating the market to grow to 14 countries by 2025.
