Farmers in Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea, have successfully mass-cultivated Parmi, a new rice variety developed by the Provincial Agricultural Kiwon since 2009. This rice variety, which takes only 80 days from planting to harvest, is significant in maximizing paddy use efficiency and increasing farm household income by allowing other crops to be planted in between. It also reduces water and fertilizer consumption by over 30% and 10%, respectively. This large-scale cultivation is expected to contribute to responding to food crises in the era of climate change and improving domestic food self-sufficiency.
