The Director General of Liberia's National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA), Emma Metieh Glassco, has successfully engaged Manuel Barange, Assistant Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations, to develop aquaculture in Liberia. The FAO has pledged to support Liberia's aquaculture sector, focusing on strengthening its legal framework and building technical capacity to attract investments and transition from subsistence fish farming to a sustainable, commercial aquaculture sector. The partnership aims to create job opportunities, improve livelihoods, enhance food security, and provide a steady supply of fresh fish in the local markets, with a primary focus on tilapia and catfish. The FAO also plans to encourage women's participation in aquaculture through capacity building for fish feed production. Liberia and the FAO are set to sign a partnership agreement following an official request from NaFAA, which will include a technical exchange program with Egypt.
