Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has acknowledged that disputes in the tuna, shrimp, and banana sectors are hindering the completion of a free trade agreement with Ecuador, a necessary step for Ecuador to join the Pacific Alliance. The tuna dispute stems from Mexican tuna vessels being prevented from growing and caught by Ecuadorian vessels at a small size, and the banana dispute is due to Mexican efforts to protect banana growers from Tabasco and Chiapas. Negotiations between Mexico and Ecuador on shrimp, bananas, and now tuna have been ongoing since May, but no agreement has been reached due to these disputes and concerns from Mexican fishermen and industries.
