The Maharashtra government has permitted the sale of wine in supermarkets and general stores across the state, covering establishments with a minimum floor space of 1,000 square feet. This decision aims to bolster wine producers and farmers by creating a new revenue stream and expanding the distribution network for wine. Wines sold in supermarkets will incur an excise duty of Rs.10 per liter, generating an estimated additional income of Rs.5 crore for the state. Despite opposition from the BJP, the government defends the move as beneficial for farmers and wineries, highlighting that it mirrors existing policies in BJP-governed states like Goa and Himachal Pradesh. Maharashtra, hosting over 65% of India's wine industry, expects a significant boost in wine sales with the new policy.
