In 2023, maize prices in Kenya decreased by 12.7% due to improved local harvests and a fertiliser subsidy programme, with the average price per kilogramme falling to Sh70.2 in December from Sh80.5 the previous year. The price of a two-kilogram packet of sifted maize flour also saw a 14.9% reduction. Despite these price drops, local maize production still falls short of demand, with the country's harvest decreasing to 34.3 million bags in 2022 from 36.7 million bags in the previous year.
